First round of extradition hearings, summary

The first week of the current round of extradition hearings saw Julian Assange re-arrested based on the latest superseding indictment. The Court denied the application by Assange’s legal team to exclude from consideration the 11th hour expansion of the alleged facts under the charge of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion. Assange was thratened with removal from the court.

New extradition request based on same charges issued proving political motives behind prosecution

The US DoJ filed a further superseding indictment in the form of an entirely new extradition request to the UK court less than 3 days before the final administrative hearing on Friday 14 August 2020. This means Assange will have to be re-arrested on the first day of the resumption of his substantive extradition hearing on 7 September 2020.

Amnesty International: ‘Drop all charges against Julian Assange that relate to his publishing activities’

Amnesty International has issued a call for the USA to drop all charges against Julian Assange that relate to his publishing activities as part of his work with WikiLeaks. The prestigious organisation, which prides itself on defending political prisoners worldwide, stated that: ‘“The US government’s unrelenting pursuit of Julian Assange for having published disclosed documents that included possible war crimes committed by the US military is nothing short of a full-scale assault on the right to freedom of expression.”

While the US yet again added new allegations to the indictment against Julian Assange last month, the new and third indictment is still to be formally served to the district judge Vanessa Baraitser. What is more, the prosecution barrister, Joel Smith, could not commit to any timeline as to when it would be served.

The International Bar Association condemns the mistreatment of Julian Assange during the extradition trial

The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) condemned the mistreatment of Mr. Assange during his extradition trial in February 2020, which included him being handcuffed 11 times; stripped naked twice and searched; his case files confiscated after the first day of the hearing; and his request to sit with his lawyers during the trial, rather than in a dock surrounded by bulletproof glass, denied.

The Council of Bar and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) which represents the bars and law societies of 45 countries, and through them more than 1 million European lawyers, wrote an open letter to UK Home Secretary Ms. Priti Patel, in which it expressed concern over the breach of lawyer-client privilege of Mr. Assange.
